Breast Augmentation

Women who wish to enhance the shape and size of their breasts may wish to consider a breast augmentation, which is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure used to lift, shape, and increase the size of a woman’s bust in order to enhance her appearance. Breast augmentation is one of the top five most popular surgical cosmetic procedures sought by women in the United States. Nearly 300,000 women underwent breast augmentation surgery in 2005 alone.

The best candidates for breast augmentation are women in good emotional and physical health who have a realistic expectation of what this procedure can and cannot deliver. The results of a patient’s breast augmentation will depend on a number of factors including here overall health, age, chest structure, nipple position, breast shape, skin texture, and ability to heal. The size and type of an implant, the surgeon’s technical skills, and the type of breast augmentation procedure performed will also determine the results of a patient’s plastic surgery.

New Jersey Breast Augmentation: Techniques

There are many surgical options when it comes to finding the right breast augmentation procedure for a patient. Breast implants vary in composition and size, placement in the chest area, and by the technique used to insert the implants into the body. In order to determine the procedure that is right for you, it is important to speak to a plastic surgeon about the risks and benefits of each option, your goals, your full medical history, and all other related questions and concerns.

The implants used in a breast augmentation can be inserted under the glandular breast tissues or may be placed under the muscle. There are also a variety of specific techniques used to insert the implants into the chest area:

  • Transaxillary – uses an incision in the armpit area to insert the implants
  • Periareolar – inserts the implants through an incision made around the nipple.
  • Inframammary – involves inserting the implants through an incision made in the breast fold
  • Transumbilical –inserted through an incision made in the navel area

Each of these breast augmentation techniques has their own risks and benefits that can be discussed in greater detail with a plastic surgeon.

It is important for prospective patients to discuss the risks and complications associated with breast augmentation. Breast implants are not necessarily permanent and may have to be removed or replaced after a certain period of time depending on how the body responds to their presence. Some of the complications associated with breast augmentation include: rupture, capsular contracture, deflation, infection, visible implant imperfections, numbness, asymmetry, chest wall deformity, and more. A good breast augmentation surgeon will take every measure to mitigate the risks associated with this procedure.
