Blepharoplasty is the medical term for cosmetic eyelid surgery. Aging, the pull of gravity, heredity and lifestyle choices can create visible changes in the eye area that can give off an appearance of looking older than the person feels or always tired or sad. While still ranking in the top five surgical cosmetic procedures, blepharoplasty is not sought out to remedy these problems as frequently as it once was. Blepharoplasty patients can expect the surgical procedure to remove the baggy lower eyelids and droopy upper lids, resulting in a more refreshed, more youthful appearance.

Blepharoplasty candidates might have excess skin on their upper eyelids that folds over the natural fold, has loose skin or puffiness. Blepharoplasty can help improve lower eyelids that have excess skin and fine wrinkles and bags. Depending on what the patient wishes to improve upon, the surgeon will determine the best method, taking into account other facial features and surgical preferences.

The plastic surgeon will provide specific instructions on how to prepare for the surgery, but patients should expect to experience bruising and swelling, tightness around the eye, discomfort and temporarily blurred vision that will eventually subside to reveal a smoother, firmer eye area. Within the first week after the surgery, blepharoplasty patients may experience the most discomfort and discoloring, but most normal non-strenuous activities can be resumed.

Everybody has different healing times, but blepharoplasty patients will know what to expect prior to undergoing the surgical method, as well as all other surgical information if they have chosen a qualified surgeon. Regardless of what type of cosmetic surgery the patient wishes to undergo, one of the most important decisions the patient has to make is that of who will perform the procedure. Not all physicians advertising for blepharoplasty are formally trained to perform the procedure, so patients should be sure to check the surgeon’s qualifications. Patients seeking cosmetic procedures should only choose skilled and experienced board certified plastic surgeons to ensure a safe and positive outcome.
